Homemade bread + Purity Organic juices

One of our wedding purchases was a lovely, bright yellow dutch oven ! My sister–in–law started baking fresh bread a while ago and Jon decided his soon–to–wife should make him homemade bread too. :-)

It took us a while to finally remember to buy yeast, but this week was our first attempt at dutch oven bread. Here is the recipe sent from my s–i–l:

In a bowl, mix 3 cups flour, 2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon Yeast, 1 2/3 cup of warm water. Let it sit over night or mix it in the morning to bake in the evening.

Two hours before baking, fold the dough in half and tuck the sides under to form a loaf. This can be done on a floured board, or in the bowl the dough was mixed in. (This is where we had a hard time; the dough was extremely “blobby” according to Jon. It wouldn’t hold a form, so we couldn’t really form a loaf. Maybe less water?) Then let the dough sit for another two hours.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and put the dutch oven bottom (not the lid) in the oven to heat up.

When you’re ready to bake, pull out the rack with the pot. Simply pour the dough in, usually just flipping the bowl upside down. Set the lid on top and bake for 30 min. Remember to unscrew the knob from the lid if it plastic! After 30 min, take the lid off and bake for 15 more min.

Easy peasy! And round one was a success! We have a few tweaks to try on the next batch: our oven is hotter, so we’ll heat to 425 instead; a little less salt; and either a little less water or more flour. I think it will just take some experimenting to see what we like best.

We used white flour, but we also want to try baking with wheat flour. Oh, the places we’ll go making fresh bread!

And now, a box of Purity Organic juices was sent to my office as a trial (the job comes with some perks), so of course, I had to try all of the flavors. The four flavors are Orange Mango Paradise, Strawberry Paradise, Pomegranate and Blueberry Plus and Lemonade.

An example of the ingredients:

  • Orange Mango Paradise – contains 20% juice
  • Lemonade – contains 15% juice

For the Orange Mango bottle, there are 220 calories, 56 grams of carbohydrates and 52 grams of sugar.

Overall, still very sweet. Which makes it very delicious, of course. I wouldn’t drink these on a regular basis, to be sure. But if you have a sweet drink craving – I know I want something other than water on occasion! – an organic juice option isn’t the worst thing to choose. And I would imagine these are better for the kiddos than standard kids juice drinks.
