Holiday Party Survival Guide - What To Avoid & Order

Posted Dec 17 2009 9:32am

The average person consumes an extra 600 calories a day between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

Holiday parties are one of the major causes for this seasonal spike.

You can't get through this time of year without getting invited to at least ONE holiday party.

Face it everyone you know is throwing one!

So here are a few survival tips to keep you trim...

WORST CLASSIC HOLIDAY DRINK:

Eggnog - 350 cals, 19 grams fat, 22 grams sugar and that's without alcohol.

Healthier option:

Homemade Hot Chocolate, just as tasty with 1/3 of the calories

WORST HOLIDAY APPETIZER:

Crab cakes - 400 cals, 19 grams fat thanks to the mayo, bread crumbs, and frying

Healthier option:

Shrimp Cocktail - but no double dipping, most cocktail sauces are loaded with sodium

WORST HOLIDAY PARTY COCKTAIL:

Gin & Tonic - 210 cals and 22 grams sugar, tonic water is adult 7-Up!

Healthier option:

Champagne - just as bubbly with 1/4 of the sugar, plus you look classier in your ugly christmas sweater

WORST HOLIDAY PARTY SNACK:

Spinach and Artichoke Dip - 285 cals, 17 grams fat because of mayo, sour cream, and cream cheese not including chips/bread.

Healthier option:

Limit Yourself - have one chip's worth and stock your plate with veggies and fruit

WORST HOLIDAY DESSERT:

Pecan Pie A La Mode - 810 cals, 65 grams fat, 55 grams sugar is gonna hurt!

Healthier option:

Angel Food Cake - light and low in calories because it's made with egg whites
