I was lucky enough to attend an awesome holiday party with a few close friends last weekend. We all brought food to one house and spent the evening playing games, catching up on each other's lives and just enjoying a little festivity.
As usual the conversation went from shopping to vacations and then to the "gain" experienced during the holiday. (Both the dept gain and the weight gain)
Like anything you want to be successful at, you have to plan your success. It just doesn't happen. Of course I've preached this to my friends for years.
I have found a few things that help me maintain my goal of lifelong fitness during the holidays, while still allowing me to have fun!
Hydrate - I always make sure I drink plenty of water everyday. Just because I'm shopping or out partying with my friends I still drink plenty of water. My general rule is two glasses of water for every one alcoholic drink.
Moderate your food intake - I love my mom's pumpkin pie, but NOTHING is better then my own pumpkin cheesecake. I have learned that by limiting myself to one sweet per day I don't have extra pounds to loose after the first of the year.
Move - No matter what, I don't skip some kind of aerobic activity everyday. It might just be a quick walk or it could be a 10 mile bike ride, but I move move move! This not only makes sure I am burning those calories, but it keeps me from falling into the stupor of eating too much and feeling bloated.
Now that I'm in my 40's I know that staying ahead of weight gain is the best way to help stay fit for life. If I don't gain the weight, then I don't have to loose it!
