Have You Had Success Finding a Fitness Partner?

Posted by Stephanie B.

I have to say I do 99% of my exercising alone. I do have a few friends that I go surfing with, but coordinating is such a nightmare. If I wait for a friend to go with me, I could wait months. Maybe it's a Los Angeles thing, but it's rare for me to find someone that is ready to commit to a consistent schedule with anything. How about you?

only DH. when DH has some free time we play tennis together or go walking...i am trying to find someone to go to the gym wt me but currently my schedule is changing from week to week so i can't even set a fix hour to go to a gym...so i work out home, alone...
Does my dog count. I have been trying to walk more - oh ah I know, big workout! My dog is good about holding me accountable. No worries that he won't show up and he only whines if I DON'T go through with our walk. I think it's really difficult to find someone who is a) on the same page, b) has a similar schedule, and c) is someone you actually want to spend time with. I used to go to a ton of classes, but now with kids (and dog) it's harder to fit that into my schedule. It's me and myself a lot, which is okay.
Yes, Sort of. The only person I can really count on to work out alongside me ('cause I can force him to) is my fiance. Working out together is great because it gives us an activity to do, it makes us feel good about each other, and naturally, we want to support each other in attaining the best health and best body we can get. :) The downside to this is that sometimes we're both lazy and want to just sit home and veg out, something else it's easy to fall into in the world of coupledom. We're still trying to strike that balance. But it definitely is easier than getting flakey friends to try to commit to regular workout sessions.
Training for an event. I find that when I'm training for a specific event (triathlon, 10K, etc.) it's much easier to find people on similar schedules doing similar workouts. I've had good success training with both a partner and a group of people for triathlons.
Competitive Sports. My workout partners are racquetball players; it's the only way I can workout with someone is to play a competitive sport. Having a workout partner to do machine cardio or weights doesn't work for me because I consider that time my time. I usually listen to a lecture or educate myself while on the cardio machine.
Once upon a Time. I had a great workout partner for three years. Then we moved to another state. Now I'm flying solo.
Loner. For working out, I've pretty much become a loner. Hiking and tennis, yes I have found success with a partner - although you may remember my posts about the chatty tennis partner - and for hiking, a partner has become necessary simply for the entertainment factor. But working out, I don't necessarily enjoy working out with someone. I find it hard to do cardio and chat... but in general, checking out the group boards seems like a good bet if that's what you're looking for!

I think that is life. To convince your friends to come with you is tricky.

The good news is that if you find a good fitness program, you might build a community throught it.

I can't imagine any of my friends joining me on my daily ashtanga yoga routine at 6:30 in the morning. But since going there, I find other nutters who share my practice and they become my partners, even though I never knew them before.

I think Mysore style of Ashtanga yoga is about the community.

I s'pose I got spoiled by having such incredible training partners* in the past that I don't even bother trying to find a new one. In my "old age" (I'll be a ripe old 36 next week!), I'd rather get my workouts done with as little chit-chat as possible, so I, too, train solo in my basement, a local track, wherever.

* for over 4 years, I trained with powerlifting legend, Ed Coan at Chicago's (equally legendary) Quads Gym. Want motivation? Try lifting with someone 50+ lbs lighter than you who can out-squat, out-bench, out-deadlift, out-EVERYTHING just about anything you can do by hundreds of pounds (literally!).

Looking for a workout partner that wants to do Power 90x, its looks awesome, but a motivational partner would be great. I have a redone garage, and all the equipment. I can work-out 8-9am or 9-10am, and would be up for doing it 5 days a week. I live in West La in mar Vista. Would love to find a fitness partner. Email me if interested. I am 37, moderatley fit, (married with 2 wonderful kids, 5 and 2.) So email if interested, danspilo@yahoo.com, or call 310.936.5553
