Fathers Day - Same Old Thing?

Posted Aug 26 2008 4:36pm

So how was your Fathers day? Or stick day as we call it at my house, and yes I got a very nice stick for fathers day, thank you.(I'll explain in a later post)

My question is, who did something or gifted something that was healthy or fitness related? I realize that Fathers day is one where Dad might kick back and enjoy some sports a few beers and a BBQ but is that an exception or the norm. Did Dad celebrate Fathers day with his family in keeping with a healthy lifestyle? Or did Dad celebrate the day with more choices and practices of someone who doesn't pay attention to his health? In either case, did you help or hinder the cause?

How the family celebrated the day is a direct reflection of how Dad leads his life. If Dad is someone who regularly goes to the gym, eats well and practices stress reducing techniques then his family probably did things for him that were along those lines. He was probably served breakfast in bed with a healthy smorgasbord of choices, such as an egg white omelet, whole grain toast and some fruit. He was then given gifts that pertained to the sporting or exercise activity of his choice such as a fitness magazine subscription, a new set of golf balls, a new softball glove or a new pair of cycling shorts. He sat in front of the T.V. watching his favorite sporting event with a couple of light beers or he might of gone out to indulge himself in his favorite sporting event. When BBQ time came around he grilled chicken breast while other family members were making salads and healthy side dishes. When Fathers day was done Dad was relaxed and refreshed and ready to take on another week.

Now my description above may sound a bit like you are in the Cleaver("leave it to Beaver") household but I am sure you get the point. Now compare the ideal above to how I expect many people celebrated Fathers day.

Breakfast was served with whole scrambled eggs with cheese, sausage links and bacon, pancakes and syrup. His gifts included liquor of his choice, a subscription to NASCAR weekly and a coupon to the local all you can eat buffet. He promptly plopped his butt into his favorite recliner where he watched sports while downing a 6 pack of beer. The BBQ was covered in ribs, burgers and sausage while other family members were diligently preparing his favorite dessert. When Fathers day was done he was stuffed, slightly buzzed, and physically exhausted from capping off an already long week of eating, drinking and being lazy. What a way to go into the new week.

What scenario closely resembles what happened in your house this weekend.
