Don't Be That Guy! - Walk With Weights

Posted May 18 2009 10:46pm
Don't be that Guy is dedicated to helping prevent common mistakes made at the gym. Through this post you will maximize your workouts, become a savvy exerciser, improve your health club etiquette and most importantly ensure you won't be THAT GUY OR GIRL!

Today's Girl:

 'Walk With Weights' Girl!

An unspoken benefit of my job is that once in a while there are some really attractive female exercisers stretching, squatting, sweating, and spandexing in my 'office'.

Hate to admit it to the hotties, but I am watching you...well, not really YOU - like in a creepy, old uncle kinda-way.

I'm watching WHAT YOU are doing at the gym because most good looking ladies are doing some of the worst stuff around the gym

Terrible exercise form, ridiculous moves, and just plain stupid stuff - really cools my thermometer on these hotties.

I mean, think about that 'Walking w/ Weights' Girl at your gym - she's gripping some hefty 2 pounders, elbows are flying, limbs are flaying, and everyone near her is reminiscing about their grandmother...

Don't be THAT girl! It's not sexy or effective.

Just because dumbbells are portable, doesn't mean they should ever make it to the cardio equipment secion.

Why No Walking With Weights:
  • for every 10 pounds you add to your body while walking, you only burn about five to eight extra calories!
  • you aren't going to tone your arms
  • you increase the risk of injury or muscle tear

Try Instead:

1. Circuit Training - 8 to 10 exercises done consecutively with little to no rest in between combining the aerobic/strength benefits

2. Focus On Your Big Muscles - If time is the issue, stick with exercises for your chest, back, legs.

3. Combine Arm & Leg Exercises - Spike the heart rate and drop your time spent at the gym by pairing a standing leg exercise with an arm exercise (i.e. dumbbell squat to curl, cable lunge to shoulder press, etc.)
