I find my workouts are a lot more interesting and effective if I use a heart rate monitor. I have the kind that wraps around the chest and is read by at wrist watch type device. How about you?
Great for measuring impact of workout. I haven't used a heart rate monitor before, but I know they are used in Cardio Tennis, a program offered at tennis facilities across the US which keeps several players on court at once all moving and hitting tennis balls, keeping their heart rate up and in "the zone"-65 to 85 percent of their maximum heart rate according to the program. At that level, the players are believed to be getting the biggest health benefits in the hour workout.
