Do You Eat Before or After?

Posted by Lela D.

I'm wondering if people eat before or after a workout? I know there is some debate about what we're supposed to do for certain results, but I'm interested in what people actually do.

Now, I do. Eating a light snack is the best way to go before a work out. Mornings are a little tough in general and if one wants to lose weight, working out in the morning before breakfast is an excellent way to burn fat. The key point is how you feel after your work out. If you are so starve, you feel fatigued or irritable and you are not the best of company. That's telling you something, your body is hungry. A light snack before is a good idea. Every routine is ones choice of what they want to do.
I eat very lightly before Muay Thai. If I don't, I will feel nauseated during the conditioning portion of class. It's intense (if you're doing it right) and a full stomach will NOT help. For yoga, I choose a light meal beforehand if I'm hungry. I still don't like to do yoga on a full stomach, as I don't want to be bogged down doing twists or bending over.
If I'm doing Pilates or yoga I make sure I have an empty stomach. For other stuff I want it to be at least an hour or so since I've had anything. If I'm lifting weights I usually do a small protien shake afterwards.
