Yahoo news had a story up today about diets. One story mentioned how a recent study said that calories, no carbohydrates, really matter for weight loss. I had to really scratch my head as I read this, are they really saying that calories matter? Why did low carb diets become so popular? No it's not because Atkins showed the world that carbs are bad. He actually came out with a book in the 70's but everyone ignored it since low fat diets were the cool thing.
Low carb diets initially became the "it" thing with diets because people found when they decreased their carbs they felt better and lost weight. Now before we knew about insulin resistance and all the nutrient timing stuff, we knew that by eliminating carbs we eliminated high calories foods.
No pizza, pasta or bread. That equals less calories and we lose weight. It sounds like I agree with the study right? Wrong, lets think about this for a second. We don't drop our carbs but we drops calories. So today we'll eat less protein, tomorrow healthy fats and the next day carbs. How about we just drop a little bit of everything every day and mix all three macro nutrients together in a meal?
As you can probably tell, I completely disagree with the study. There's an old analogy in this industry and it goes like this "The researchers are 5 years behind what the practitioners are doing". This study does nothing but prove that.
