Complex Carbs: Not so complex.

Posted Jun 08 2010 7:00am

I hope you all got a chance to check out where you can get protein , so now I want to fill you all in about complex carbs! A proper diet is a three fold of lean protein , complex carbs, and healthy fats.

So why complex? Carbohydrates are broken down into two types: simple and complex. Simple carbs are also known as sugar (things like white flour and sugar). Aside from fruit, you should try to avoid simple carbs as your body breaks them down really easy causing blood sugar levels to go a little crazy. (Fruit are the exception because they also contain fiber, vitamins, and nutrients). So where can you get them? Here are some ways you can get them, broken down into categories for you:

From Whole Grains: Amaranth, Brown Ride, Buckwheat, Cream of Wheat, Oatmeal, Quinoa, Wheat germ, Whole-grain or whole-wheat pasta.
From Veggies: Artichokes, Asparagus, Beans, Beet greens, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Carrots, Celery, Chickpeas, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Kale, Lentils, Lettuce, Onions, Peas, Radishes, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes, Yams, Zucchini.
From Fruit: Apples, Bananas, Berries, Citrus fruits, Grapefruit, Grapes, Kiwi, Mango, Melons, Oranges, Pears, Plums, Pomegranate.

Do you eat complex carbs with each meal? Where do you get your complex carbs from?
