Comfort Food for a Discomforting Run

Posted Jul 13 2010 12:00am

When we were in Fort Lauderdale last week the hubs and I decided we wanted to go out for sushi on one of our first nights there. We looked for a place with an innovative menu and lots of good eats. After consulting Yelp and Urbanspoon we settled upon Asia Bay for our sushi feast.

We started out our meal with a bottle of Dewazakura Tobiroku "Festival of Stars" Sake. It was a dry, cold, sparkling sake that when poured over the cucumber made for a refreshing contrast to the south Florida heat. We also ordered edamame as an appetizer which was lightly salted and was perfectly cooked. The saltiness balanced out the light sweetness of the sake.

The view was lovely and it was easy to see why Fort Lauderdale is called the Venice of the United States. We liked the breeze that the canal afforded us and also enjoyed seeing the birds go by while following the canal. We didn't see a lot of boats, but that could be related to how low the bridge was right there!

Trying to err on the side of caution we ended up settling on four rolls and four slices of Hamachi Sashimi. We went with the Toro Jalapeno (toro, scallions and jalapeno topped with masago); the Tuna Rock (diced tuna, tempura flakes, avocado, scallions, masago and spicy mayo); the Beauty and the Beast (half eel & half tuna roll with avocado, asparagus, scallions and masago) and the Fuji (tuna, cucumber and scallions topped with avocado, wasabi, tobiko, masago, tuna and kimchee sauce shown below).

The fuji roll and the hamachi were both at the recommendation of our waiter and let me tell you - he was spot on. We loved the fresh pieces of Ahi Tuna and the kimchee vinaigrette was to die for! All of our sushi was really tasty and everything was extremely well prepared. Our waiter also let us know that the head chef had been at Nobu previously and it showed with the creativity in the rolls. It was an amazing meal and I would highly recommend Asia Bay to anyone in the Gold Coast region of Florida!

Do you enjoy sushi? If so, what is your favorite roll to order?
