Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2007 Oct 17;(4):CD004577. LinksStretching to prevent or reduce muscle soreness after exercise.Herbert R, de Noronha M.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: The evidence derived from mainly laboratory-based studies of stretching indicate that muscle stretching does not reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness in young healthy adults
Do I believe this is necessarily true? No but I understand the research. Here's my question though....
Was it only stretching in one plane of motion?
Physical therapist Gary Grey talks about 3-D stretching which involves moving in the frontal, sagittal and transverse planes to hit multiple muscle fibers. This study doesn't mention which plan of motion was used.
Was it a purely sagittal plane workout?
On the other hand, I don't really think that stretching is going to reduce our next day muscle soreness, we're causing micro trauma after all.
What do I think? Stretch!!
