Clinical Studies - JHMI Lab Rat Hopeful

Posted Oct 06 2007 4:09am

I'm in the process of joining a medical study. While my attempt at losing weight worked for a bit, I wasn't able to maintain my goal. Alas.

My main issue to work on is not allowing the stress of others to enter my life and interfere in my personal peace (and sometimes space). Unhealthy stress isn't good at all when working on something like this. I've been screaming most of it out on my blogs (thankfully!) and it's helped a great deal in dealing with eliminating it recently.

Even for all the issues I've been having, I am still healthy at least...I think. My hair is growing in psycho-fast. I shaved it bald Easter 2007 and, as of 6 October, it's already nearly twice as long than it was when I cut it and A LOT thicker. That's not normal for me at all and, if it keeps at this rate, I'll have more hair than I know what to do with by Easter next. I'll have to ask my doctor about it when I see her next....and re-learn cornrow braiding. :-/

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this clinical study. They're offering a workout regimen, free use of a fully equiped physical fitness facility, mentoring, exercise training and all. Completely free. Gratis. Baltimores Favorite Price. Cheaper than a Five Finger Discount.

Oh, it's so nice being a Lab Rat.

As a part of the screening for the study, I had a "DEXA" scan done. I looked up some of how to read it and, according to the sites, the T/Z Score is very important. A low number represents really bad bone density with -2.5 being indicative of Osteoporosis.

I'm not sure if a T-Score of 3.1 and a Z-Score of 3.2 are good or not but it's above the opposite of what the sites say is bad. And...I have a really big head.

This DEXA thing really is interesting. I finally got a accurate analysis of my BMI as well. At 45.4 (with me being 1.6 meters) it's not good but, in viewing the picture, I have some seriously ripped muscles going on somewhere in there. Which is pretty nice. Now to get the fat surrounding them to let them show a little more.

Even if I don't get into the studies I've been applying for, me thinks people will be horrified of my Freddie Mercury impersonations over the next year. >:)
