Childhood Obesity: How To Fix The Problem

Posted Aug 26 2008 4:34pm

This is a portion of an article found at Reuters.com:

"Preschool children who are regularly given sugary drinks between meals are more likely to be overweight than their peers, new study findings suggest.

The "empty" calories from sugar-sweetened sodas and fruit drinks have been blamed for contributing to childhood obesity, but not all studies have found evidence to support that claim.

In the new study, Canadian researchers looked at whether young children who regularly had sweet drinks between meals, specifically, were more likely to become overweight before age 5."

Nutrition is only part of the obesity problem in America. In my opinion, the bigger cause of childhood obesity (or adult obesity) is inactivity/sedentary lifestyles. Remember, if you consume more calories than you burn, YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT. Active lifesytles, which includes regular exercise, will cause our obesity rates to decline. So, go walking every day during work breaks, kids go outside and play everyday for an hour, play pick-up games, go dancing, take a hike, etc. I think you get the idea.
