Canthisexercise... ![]() ![]() give you thisline in your chest? ![]() If so, then sign me up... But guess what? It can't! Gym science would like you to believe that doing chest flies can give you more cleavage than a Playboy photo shoot...but they won't. Chest flies do not work your inner chest. Chest flies do not give you a more defined line between your pecs either. Let's take a look at why... ![]() What Is That Line? All that white between the pectoral muscles is muscle tendon. Tendon connects muscle to bone. The bones that the pectorals connect to are the sternum and your clavicle. Genetically every person has different lengths to their muscle bellies and their tendinous attachments as well. That's why some guys have the Grand Canyon going through their pecs when others are closer than Olsen Twins. You can increase the size of the muscle attached to the tendon, but cannot change or build that line itself. How Do Muscles Contract? Muscles contract in an All-Or-None manner. When the chest muscles contract the entire pectoralis is used, every part of it. Doing chest flies cannot isolate just your inner chest. It's impossible for just the muscle fibers surrounding that particular area to contract, but everywhere else on the muscle not to. Bottom Line For The Line: You cannot change the line between your pecs, but you may create the appearance and presence of 'cleavage' by increasing the size of the chest muscles and lowering your body fat. The chest fly can and should be used in your program. It should be accompanied by a wide variety of other chest exercises and not thought to be the only answer for improving the line between your chest. |
