Carnitas y Cerveza

Posted by Chef Jeff R.

I have been pretty focused since January on my new lifestyle. I feel very good about my eating habits and my workout regiment. However, I have been concerned about going out to dinner with friends and going to conferences or food shows (It's part of my job!)

I also taste the fabulous meals that the units of Stanford Dining serve everyday! (I know...Tough Job!) This is the hardest part, but I have been able to navigate through all this using my new outlook on life....a taste here or there isn't bad.....moderation and the dining choices I make are the key!

I recently went to a culinary conference in Monterrey Mexico and I knew it was going to be a HUGE challenge not to come back with a few extra lbs........My weakness for Pork products and Beer would really be tested. The Carnitas and Cerveza taste an awful lot better when you are in Mexico! But....I was able to use my new sensibility and not eat more than I was hungry for. There was even a nice gym in my hotel and I was able to not miss a workout! I came back not only without gaining weight...I actually lost weight! I plan on applying this philosophy to the upcoming holidays! That way I can eat Turkey and Gravy and Mashed Potatoes.....just in moderation!

That is a BIG accmplishment. Well done!
You just brought up one of the most important aspects of a healthy lifestyle... moderation. I'm always cooking and baking AND I enjoy my food, but in small portions. I have a small piece of pie, one or two cookies, etc. Great news to hear you actually lost weight while at a culinary conference. Weight gain during the holidays is not necessary nor should be an acceptable standard. Apply moderation and you will be able to enjoy the holidays without weight gain.
