Buy A Heart Rate Monitor? - part 1

Posted May 21 2009 10:43pm 2 Comments

If I asked you, 'Would you buy a heart rate monitor?'

You'd probably say...

'Hmmm, I've heard about those. But, they kinda look like a futuristic bra and I'm not sure it's for me.'

Well over the next few posts I'm gonna discuss heart rate and the heart rate monitor - then let you make the decision.

After all, its your dollar!

What Is Heart Rate (HR)?

  • HR is the # of times your heart beats in 1 minute

What Is A Heart Rate Monitor (HRM)?

A HRM is a piece of equipment that you wear while exercising to identify how many beats your heart is making at any particular moment of your workout.

Think of a HRM like that of a police radar gun. The radar gun displays exactly how many miles per hour a car is driving - the HRM will display exactly how many beats per minute your heart is going at.

How It Works?

There are two major parts of the heart rate monitor:

1. The Chest Strap - has sensors that reads your heart rate

2. The Watch - the device that will receive the heart rate and display it

Why Monitor Your Heart Rate?

1. Maximize the results of your workout

2. HR is an indicator of:
  •  fitness level
  • disease risk
  • the intensity of a workout

What Is Normal Heart Rate?

At rest it should be between 60-90 heart beats
  • The lower your heart rate the more efficient  your heart is getting at sending blood out to your muscles
  • The higher your heart rate the harder your heart is working to pump out blood
  • Lower heart rates are associated with better health because your heart isn't working as hard - decreasing the stress on the heart.

heart rate monitors using watches is a thing of the past. this is such a cumbersome interface. you can collect and see unlimited history of your training data with a great using interface using a smartphone. Tied to gether with the GPS you can even track yourself on the web via google earth with your real time data. Have a look at www.athlosoft.com. Their bluetooth chestbelt comes with a motion sensor and provides your your stride count and stride length. the interface is great as you can customize the buttons and the info you want, as you want to see it.

Using a heart rate monitor watch is a great way to make the workout more efficient. I would like to point out that there are also heart rate monitors that do not have the chest strap, they are called the strapless heart rate monitor

They are very good for those who just can't stand the thought of wearing the chest strap.
