Brown Fat

Posted Apr 17 2009 11:51pm

Remember when it was popular to be pudgy?

Neither do I!

Everyone hates body fat.

Our society hates body fat.

Even I don't like to use the f-word and prefer 'body phat'.

Well, did you know that there are actually different types of fat too?

You're probably thinking to yourself, 'Oh, great...'.

Many articles and research studies have been coming out on something called BROWN FAT.

This is one type of body fat that everyone is bound to LOVE.

Here are some quick notes on brown fat to get you up to speed (sorry for the creepy baby picture):

Brown Fat Facts:
  • Brown fat cells are actually brown because they are loaded withmitochondria that contain iron, which gives the tissue a reddish brown color.
  • The mitochondria is considered the 'power plant' of the cell, where sugar and fat are burned for energy - this energy is given off as heat (and calories).
  • Brown fat's primary function is to generate body heat, helping maintain body temperature in newborn infants and in hibernating animals.
  • Brown fat makes up 5% of the body mass of newborns and was thought to disappear in adults - UNTIL NOW.

Come back tomorrow to see the adult statistics on brown fat!
