Are Heavy Metals In Your Protein Shake?

Posted Dec 21 2010 2:04pm
The only heavy metal I want is Metallica, preferably the Black Album and loud.

That heavy metal is in my ears...I can deal with that.

But I never want heavy metal in my body.

Would you?

Well, the July Issue of Consumer Reports finds that many popular protein shakes could be toxic for you.

15 different protein drinks were tested for four heavy metals

1. Arsenic - tasty!

2. Cadmium - yummy!

3. Lead - scrumptious!

4. Mercury - delish!

Tests results found metal present in ALL 15 drinks...yikes.

Can I get some protein with my metal?

Of particular concern were three of the top-selling products because consuming three servings a day could result in exposure to arsenic, cadmium or lead that exceed proposed limits for contaminants:

1. EAS Myoplex (Arsenic, Cadmium)

2. Muscle Milk - Chocolate (Cadmium, Lead)

3. Muscle Milk - Vanilla Creme (Lead)

True you could argue that most individuals are not drinking these shakes three times per day.

But why the heck would you knowingly put something hazardous into your body?

Who cares if the amount you consume is within the 'limits for contaminants' set by the FDA or whoever for a protein shake...that's nasty and terribly ironic as these shakes are supposedly for - health.

If you are going to use protein shakes and powders, do me and yourself a favor and  look for more natural forms .

Also always read ingredient lists and do your homework before chugging down some heavy metals.

Rock on!
