Are agility ladder exercises a good or bad idea for someone newly starting the gym, out of shape, and overweight?

A friend of mine recently told me that they had just started up the gym, at their wife's insistence, after years of being a couch potato and overweight by probably 75 or more pounds.  On his third visit, the trainer introduced the ladder and had his group do 3 different exercises using the ladder in addition to the normal strength training using weights.  I thought this seemed a bit aggresive and risky but I don't know much about this stuff, so I thought I would ask the experts.
