Achieving Those Sexy Abs

Posted Sep 29 2008 4:01pm

I had the chance to do a online Q and A with Craig Ballantyne, author of Turbulence Training for Amazing Lower Abs! You can even pick up a copy for a 21 day trial period for less than $5! I cannot stress enough how much I love the Turbulence Training workouts and have had HUGE success with every workout! Coming soon, I will show you the transformation I made with the TT/Twitter contest, in only 30 days!

Now for the interview…

Q: How important is nutrition when it comes to trying to achieve six pack abs? What nutrition tips do you suggest?

Answer:
I can’t overemphasize how important nutrition is for fat loss and six packabs. The easiest way to drop your body fat percentage is to improve your nutrition. For me and my clients, that has been to first eliminiate sugar, than processed carbohydrates, than modified carbohydrates (bread, pasta), and just to stick with fruits and vegetables as the carbohydrate source. That’s how you get six pack abs.

Q: Which should you focus more on; weight training or interval training to lose belly fat and why?

Answer:
It depends…for guys, weight training, because sculpting your body is part-illusion, part-reality. If a guy has bigger muscles and bigger ab muscles, he can see his abs at 12-13% body fat. But if he is skinny and has no
muscle, he won’t be able to see his abs even at 10%.

For women, it’s probably interal training, but I hesitate to say that because I don’t want women to stop doing resistance training. Both are necessary. While women won’t have the muscle that men have, it’s important
they do the same type of resistance exercises so that they have some muscle to show off when the fat is gone.

Q: What is an approximate body fat percentage that you will need to reach to have a nice ab definition?

Answer:
Guys are 10%-13%, depending on the amount of muscle they have. Women are higher, but it depends on many factors.

At the end of the day, what does it really matter what the body fat percentage is? All that matters is seeing the abs. Plus, given the inaccuracy of most people’s body fat measures, its tough to say for a woman.

Q: I know that crunches are the wrong way to go when it comes to achieving sexy abs, so what ab exercises would you suggest we focus on instead?

Answer:
If you go to a gym, you should include cable abs exercises. If you don’t, the Stability Ball Rollout would be my top choice for an ab exercise to help you build abdominal muscle. Plank with elbows on the ball
is a shockingly effective exercise as well.

I also like hanging ab exercises, although these are difficult for people who aren’t strong.

For beginners, you must master the basics first, including planks, side planks, and the Bird Dog move (even though it is not a real “ab” exercise). Take care of your ab endurance and low back health first if you are
overweight and sedentary. Focus on prepping your body and burning fat through nutrition and movement.

Q: How does your Turbulence Training for Abs help us to achieve  those 6 pack abs we are all longing for?

Answer:
It has the triple threat 6-pack abs approach of…

- Advanced Nutrition and Meal Plans
- Short interval training and resistance training workouts to burn belly fat - Bodyweight ab exercise routines to challenge beginners and advanced fitness levels.

Plus, I just added SEVEN 6-Minute Ab routines as a new bonus. Really intense workouts in there for women who love to do abs.
