A healthy fat burning snack you can carry anywhere!

Posted Sep 13 2008 11:41pm

Don't worry, I am not trying to sell you anything. I just love to share good fat burning information I steal from the real experts! When you are trying to lose weight by following a low-carb diet such as South Beach, Atkins, or the Paleo-diet some meals are quite easy while others can be very difficult. I have mentioned that breakfast can be a simple omelet, lunch a salad and chicken, and dinner some meat and more salad. Pretty simple right? If you are good and following a solid fitness program, others may not even realize you are dieting until they notice your belly disappeared. But what about snacks? They are the hard part I find.

The key to snacks when eating low carb is to find something dense and filling that still fits into your macro nutrient profile of low carbohydrate. Some of my favourites are hard boiled eggs or almonds. Almost any nut should do although I stay away from peanuts due to the allergens. A perfect low carb, high protein, high EFA (essential fatty acid) snack that I recently came across and have fell in love are canned herring fillets. Yes, fish snacks! One can of 130 calories has 8 grams of fat, 6 grams coming from Omega-3 fatty acid! Zero carbohydrates and 16 grams of protein! At first this seemed too good to be true so I took a closer look at the Nutrition Facts on the back. The sodium was somewhat high at 240 mg (I am a wimp with salt) but it has more potassium than sodium which is rare and extremely good for your heart pressure.

This is a snack fit for kings! It is filling, it is low carb, high protein and high EFA and takes darn good. I am serious, herring fillets actually do taste good because they are smoked, so they don't need sugar or trans-fats for flavour. From now on I have one fillet can per day on it's own with a drink of water. It tides me over for two hours which is a long time for me. They are super cheap, like 97 cents at the grocery store so try them out and see for yourself. Just remember to wash your hands and chew some gum afterwards because that fishy smell can hang longer than the protein if you are not careful.
