One of my fitness goals for 2007 is to do a dozen pullups without stopping. I was able to do this in my younger days, but now have fallen back to being able to do only 1 or 2. I know it's a combination of increasing my back, arm, and shoulder strength as well as losing weight, so it combines two goals into one.
I've been doing 3 sets of as many pullups as I can followed by a set of close-grip lat pulldowns with the most weight I can do 12 reps with. I do this every time I go to the gym, alternating pull ups (palms out) and chin ups (palms in) from work out to work out.
After 5 weeks, I'm up to 5 pullups in my first set. I can already see and feel the difference in my shoulders and upper back. Looking forward to looking over that bar the 12th time!
