Yesterday, I attempted to become reacquainted with my former friend, morning-running. My schedule was one where I knew I’d need to relax at the end of the day, not tackle the heat and humidity for a run. So, I set the alarm and I met 5:30 a.m. for the first time in months.
Let me just say, we weren’t so happy to see each other.
******
First of all, the days are getting shorter. I woke up and literally waited around until it was light enough to head out. I’m not 100% sure of these streets, and was Not about to run in the dark, alone. Nope, this chick is a little bit smarter than that. According to weather.com, the sunrise was set for 6:13 a.m. (to be exact) so I waited until 6:15.
Secondly, I didn’t go to “bed” until 11:30 (because, I’m not smarter than that) and was completely restless. If I got more than 4 hours of sleep total it would shock me.
Third? Enough excuses! I didn’t prepare very well, and my legs completely rebelled against this idea.

All I did was head North on the main street (out and back), turns out this also means I”m heading uphill for the majority of 2 miles. Awesome – that usually works well with tired slow legs right? Sure. I reached my turn-around point and wanted to hop on a bus and say “take me back!”.
mile 1 @ 8:56 – well, at least I’m starting slow. but, even this feels like I’m pushing it
mile 2 @ 8:34 –hills? I’d rather just get UP them than drag it on with that whole ’same-effort-slower-pace’ approach.
Exhausted. I stopped, took out my ear-buds (also, FAIL), let myself cool down for a minute, and turned around.
******
Downhill? YES LET’S DO THAT. The second half of this run was so much more enjoyable. I contemplated stopping at 3 miles because I was so-not-into-this, but when G beeped at me with an 8:20 split, I kept going.
My last mile (4) was 8:09, with a “sprint” (ahem, if you could call it that) at the end and a BIG sigh of relief. Then I looked around and realized I had gone an extra block and my house was not to my left as I expected it to be.
Geeze. So. out. of. it.
*******
Basically, 40 minutes later, I was happy to have fit in 4 miles and get on with my day.
I was Not happy with the run overall, but hey, some days aren’t perfect.
Me and morning-running? We may need a few more “happy hours” to reignite that flame.
