World class athletes, pregnant people, cheaters and now a really old dude: Everybody wants to run a marathon

Posted Oct 17 2011 11:37am

Fauja Singh as he crosses the finish line. Dude was born before the Titanic sank.

This is becoming the year of the marathoner, no?

In the last 30 days…

Patrick Makau broke the world marathon record , running a 2:03:38 at the Berlin Marathon on Sept. 25.

Two weekends ago, a very pregnant Amber Miller – 38 weeks and 5 days pregnant – finished the Chicago Marathon and then … gave birth.

Last weekend, Rob Sloan ran the first 20 miles of the Kiedler Marathon in London, hopped on a bus and rode for five miles, then got off the bus and ran the last mile, “finishing” in third place. He was even given a third-place medal before he was busted by witnesses who saw him cheating.

And now… drumroll….

Drumroll again….

A 100-year-old man… a centenarian … A dude who was born in April 1911 – a year BEFORE the Titanic sank …. finished Toronto’s waterfront marathon on Sunday. Fauja Singh, 100, crossed the finish line in 8 hours, 11 minutes and 5.9 seconds. According to CBCNews in Canada , workers were dismantling the barricades and taking down the sponsor banners when Singh made his way through the finish through a throng of media, family, and friends.

Singh’s pace was a little slower than an 18-minute-mile, but I’m sure I don’t need to tell you not to smirk: A 100-year-old guy traveled 26.2 miles by foot.

It is Singh’s eighth marathon. In 2003, during the same race, he set a record in the 90-plus age category, finishing with a time of 5:40:01.

His translator, Harmander Singh, said Singh’s secret is that he eats a light diet of tea, toast, and curry.

He is known as the Turbaned Tornado.
