TIaRT – limping and losing nails

Posted May 29 2009 12:15am

Take it and Run Thursday at the Runner’s Lounge!

Running Injuries and Treatment.First it started as a slight discomfort or something that just wasn’t quite right.  And then maybe it blossomed into a full fledge injury.   Or maybe…it didn’t.

******

Despite having ~12 years of soccer playing behind me, I have managed to stay relatively injury free during my Running days. However, there have been a few bumps in the road. Rarely do I approach these with methodology; but hey, I’m still goin!

My first “long” run that began the string of I-could-go-even- farther!-epiphanies resulted in hip pain that had me limping for a few days. I adjusted my gait, walked around with a little wobble, and kept running. The idea that I had injured myself was farrrr in the back of my mind; I thought this just happened when you ran 5+miles on a track, constantly turning in one direction! Aaand, I let this go on for about a month before addressing it. When I could barely walk at the end of 3 miles I thought – hey, this might be a little problem.

After speaking with a podiatrist I got some hefty heel inserts; apparently I tend to run on my right foot a little differently, so I prop my left one up. Works WONDERS! Since that appointment there have been a few incidences, but it’s mostly when I’m at the end of a running shoe-life or being stupid about buying new inserts. Other than that, my hip has behaved. Problem=Solved.

Only one other “injury” has plagued my running days, and my poor poor feet.

During the training for my First half-marathon, I lost three toe nails. Yes, three. Why didn’t I buy new shoes? Or wear different socks, adjust my laces, and/or reconsider any aspect of this situation?! Um, I have no idea. Instead, I kept running! Thats what runners do right?? Gah. I let those little nails expire, and the next lady who gave me a pedicure gave me dirty looks. Fine, I get it! New shoes, socks, and general running approach (i.e. pay attention to things that are Not normal) = Me and my toes haven’t had any problems since then.

******

In conclusion, I now run with these inserts and these shoes. My running feet and legs are much happier with me these days!

(( And when I can afford ‘real’ orthotics I’ll definitely purchase them. Just to be safe!))
