that one time I ran twice

Posted Nov 04 2009 10:04pm

As you know, I tried something really new for me on Monday – I did a double run. I received this comment from Fitzalan – “Be warned…I do 2 runs a day a lot. They are addictive!”  Oh. So. True.

I met up with the Monday-night group in DC. I enjoy these runs a lot, and it’s familiarizing me with the streets of this city that I love. So, why not join them and add another run to the day? I’m in!

The options for a new route included 3 1/2 miles, 4  1/2 miles, or 6 miles. Um, that didn’t match up with my “5 mile evening run” plan! Obviously I had to at least try for the full 6; they were running to Iwo Jima, a monument I have yet to see.

What was missing? My running buddy, my pacer. I had to assume that my legs would go at a pace that would last, and assume that I wouldn’t have to stop from pure exhaustion after a one mile “high”.

I followed the faster group for 2.5 miles, almost to Iwo Jima, and decided to turn around and do my own thing. I headed back towards Lincoln ( my fave ), and coming up on him I decided to do the stairs. I overheard this while passing a group on the first set of stairs….

Guy, posing for the group pic: “ Do you think she’ll run all of them [stairs]?”

Oh, buddy, just ’cause you said it!
(And because, YES, I will be running all of them.
We aren’t talking Chichen Itza here, chill out.)

The last set is a little rough on the thighs; I paused at the top to walk in, say hi to Abe and soak up the neoclassical architecture. Love.

Then it was time to head back; through the trees along the reflecting pool, by the Washington Monument and finally to 14th street. As soon as I cross this, it’s my cue to “Go Fast!”.  And then breathe, ’cause I’m done.

mile 1 @ 8:34 – warming up and thinking “how many miles…hmm…”
mile 2 @ 8:02 – knew that was coming. beating the stoplights though!
mile 3 @ 8:04 – oh, those hills? no more please.
mile 4 @ 8:36 – hello stairs. And hi Abe!
mile 5 @ 7:55 – first time I have ever stopped mid-run for the bathroom. It helped.
5 – 5.1 @ 6:03 – whew. I’m addicted to double runs.

Total: 5.1 miles, 41:55, avg @ 8:12 min/mile

After a short 3 miles around the new ‘hood last night, back through the zoo and up the hill, I’m taking today OFF.
