switching it OFF

Posted May 28 2009 12:23am

Only 1 out of my last four runs has been an actual race, yet I can’t seem to switch my race-mode OFF.

Seriously, the speed is not going anywhere, but it’s also not getting me very far!

Yesterday morning;,for the first time in months, it was light enough for me to hit the pavement. Most of my runs have been on the treadmill because of how early I go; therefore, my legs are conditioned to that flat rotating belt. Weekends are usually my time back in the real running-world.

I started off feeling fresh and energized; just thinking ‘I’m outside’!  I really need to get more outside/hill workouts in to get my legs back in shape. So, for about a mile it looked like a 5-6 miler was ahead of me. But, ya know, me and my ambitious pace…..

Mile 1 @ 8:01- looks good – not too fast, not taking it Too easy.
Mile 2 @ 7:41 – considering this mostly up-hill mile, this split surprised me.
And prompted the “okay, slow down. Chill OuT.”
Mile 3 @ 7:43 – uhh, or Not.
Honestly, I tried to “take it easy” multiple times, but found myself speeding right back into this pace. These legs have a mind of their own! It was Not an easy mile; I was tired, going down and up hills, and trying to adjust to this “road” thing at 6 in the morning. About half way through I couldn’t fathom another 2 miles without some sort of break before the full uphill mile. I tried to convince my mind otherwise, playing that little mental game. That did Not work.

3.1 miles in – after my 3 mile split I  just broke into a splint and decided to get in a “5k” and then walk. There’s no great training philosophy behind this decision; I was just tired of running Fast but feeling Exhausted. So, sprint? Eh, WHY NOT.  – 23:55

This got me to the uphill mile and there was no running that occurred. I happily walked and paid attention to my music (”Touchdown” TI & Eminem. * swooon ). Around 3.8 miles I picked it back up, running until I got to 4.8

Last mile @ 7:49 – because, clearly, I had learned my pace-lesson, right?……..gah.

The Garmin got a little confused with the starting/stopping – but heres the general breakdown:

4.8 miles, 39:35, average 8:22 pace

I did two 0.1 mile sprints after a little walking; this is kind of my go-to ego boost when a run doesn’t go the way I want it to. Again, no real training philosophy. Just my improv!

2 x 0.1 miles @ 5:25, 5:35  (33 seconds, 35 seconds)

Now, two of the college Roomies are in town and I have three days of *weekend* ahead of me. Yessss.

Good luck to everyone racing & running this weekend!
