out and back UP

Posted May 28 2009 12:23am

Feeling the weight of way too many fermented beverages on Friday night, I wanted to hit the streets on Saturday.

I mean, why not go for a run at Noon when it’s 82 degrees outside, right??

Always thinking ahead over here.

I rarely head out on this type of impromptu run, but had a serious urge to get outside. So, I went with it. Part of me expected this to be a big ol’ FAIL, so I decided to grab a check I’ve been meaning to deposit for a week now. Running down to the bank and back could at least be considered “productive”, even if the workout wasn’t.

The first half was mostly downhill, although not totally lacking the incline. I had already downed about three bottles of water, so the beating sun wasn’t doing any damage just yet. I wanted an “easy” relaxed pace, and actually felt like it had finally come back to me. The goal here was to survive this little four mile trek; I’m not a fan of the hugely dehydrated sickening feeling that a run in this heat can quickly conjure up.

After honestly thinking I had retrieved my 8:30-8:45 min/mile pace (see the post below, it’s been missing!), my Garmin decided to tell me otherwise.

Mile 1 @ 8:05 …..hmmm. well, about .3 miles were downhill. So, we’ll go with that.

Mile 2 @ 7:42 …..whaat?? Uh, sweeet!

I walked across the street, put my check in, and restarted the Garmin. I figured the route back would be much slower and wanted to view it as a separate workout. This was a mini-experiment to see how I did running UP the hill(s) this time.

Mile 3 @ 7:44 ….this is ridiculous. And now I’m really starting to feel the HEAT. Gah.

…I walked for about a minute here, before starting up the hill.
Need. Water. Now. That was my motivation to Run up faster.

Mile 4 @ 7:45

I’ll take it!! Seriously, that hill was rough but it wasn’t as long as I thought. And at the top it dipped down a little bit so I got a little break. I’m still surprised I maintained that pace; I’m more surprised that it felt so natural/easy for the rest of the run. Going into a run with such low expectations is awesome! My only compromise was the sunburn I definitely got. Sunscreen?! Nope, haven’t put that on the Target list yet.

The true test will come when I see how my pace holds out for a longer run this week. Looking at last week’s mileage, I’ll be happy just to move past the 3.1 point.
