On the president’s feet: Asics for running, Nike for basketball

Posted Nov 15 2011 1:27pm

President Obama likes to run in Asics, but sticks with his tried and true Nikes for basketball.

Since 1992, every U.S. president has gone for runs or walks in a pair of Asics.

According to a report in CNBC.com , this has nothing to do with a contract with the White House. Nope. Just dumb luck.

“President Clinton liked our shoes when he was governor of Arkansas,” Gary Slayton, the brand’s vice president of emerging business who was then the vice president of marketing, told CNBC’s Darren Rovell. “He used to go a specialty running store in Arkansas to get his GT II’s.”

George W. Bush also ran in Asics, the GT 2000s.

The Asics people noticed that Obama wore Asics’ Gel Nimbus 9s while he was on the campaign trail in 2008.

When he became president, Obama’s people said he wanted to use the brand of shoe he was comfortable with.

“He was and is buying Asics, but he also wanted to wear Nike for basketball,” Slayton said.

If this trend continues through November 2012, that’s bad news for Rick Perry because he once told me that he likes wearing Brooks running shoes.

It’s too bad Sarah Palin dropped out of the GOP primaries because she loves wearing Asics. She would have fit right in – athlete wise.

Sarah Palin would have fit right in the with the rest of the presidents because she loves Asics.
