Cici's Gluten Free Waffle Cones

Posted Aug 13 2009 6:43pm

Every summer night as a teenager, I would fall asleep with the smell of waffle cones in my hair. The sweet stench permeated my clothing, my car, and anything I touched. The pads of my fingers were constantly burnt, from pulling the warm waffle off of the iron and rolling it into a perfectly shaped cone. My first real attempt at sales was all for the waffle cone bonus that I would receive on my paycheck and the chance of being the top waffle cones salesperson for the month. After those summers, I thought I would never eat another waffle cone again.

Imagine my surprise when, after reading Alison's (of Sure Foods Living) review on Cici's Gelateria in Mill Valley, I found my mouth watering and my dreams filled with gluten free waffle cones. Since I work in Mill Valley, I knew all about the delicious gelato flavors that Cici's offers. I'd read about the local, artisanal and organic practices of the business. I had even seen the adorable Cici's bike that patrols all kiddo hangouts in Mill Valley and chatted with the owner. But, I'd never tasted their waffle cones.

The waffle cone is golden brown and laced with chocolate. I licked a Tahitian vanilla gelato off of the top of my cone, barely able to appreciate the gorgeous texture and decadent flavor of the specks of brown bean in my anticipation of the perfect little cone. My first bite of the cone was crisp and crunchy and took me directly back to all of the good memories of my waffle cone filled summers. Presumably, I was sharing the cone with C, but I think he'll tell you that he only got a few bites. I kept taking the cone and wandering away, sneaking three or four bites at a time. I loved the cone so much, I left some of my cards and the owner wrote me a great email, explaining that she is a recently diagnosed Celiac and that the waffle cones have undergone many many rounds of testing to arrive at the delicious treats that they are today. And they have some new GF projects in the works (wahoo)!

If you're dairy free, Cici's also has some amazing sorbets. We got the white peach sorbet and it tastes like biting into a succulent ripe peach, only better. Cici's is the perfect summer treat. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a perfect treat for fall, and winter, and spring, too. Their inventive and seasonal flavors will definitely keep me coming back for more. Not to mention those cones.
