All you ever wanted to know about the average runner: We run. We spend a lot of money on shoes. But you knew that already.

Runningusa.org has conducted a neat little survey about habits of the typical male and female runner. Below is an excerpt of the typical male. I’ve put my answer to each question in red.

The average male who runs is….

  • Average Age: 43.6 (43 next month)
  • 71% Married (I’m divorced)
  • 76.2% College educated (check)
  • 76% Earn a household income of $75,000+ (I’m not telling!)
  •  Average number of years running: 14.2 years (7 years)
  • Average number of running events participated in during the last 12 months: 8.7events (Only 5 on a account of being injured )
  • 66.5% have completed 1 marathon or more in their lifetime (8 baby!)
  •  75.1% Run/Jog 4+ hours each week (More like 5 to 6 hours)
  • 80.9% run 12 months a year (check)
  • Average number of days run per week: 4.3 (More like 5 to 6 days)
  • Average number of miles run per week: 27.2 (More like 35 to 45 miles)
  • Favorite race distance is the Half-Marathon (35.2%) check
  • Interested in entering next year: Half-Marathon (70.4%), 5K (57.1%), 10K (55.0%), Marathon (53.2%) all of the above
  • Primary motivation to start running: For Exercise (22.4%), Weight Concerns (13.6%), Competed in School and Never Stopped (11.3%) (Exercise)
  • Motivation to continue to run: Staying in Shape (75.2%), Staying Healthy (71.1%), Having Fun (62.0%) (Addicted)
  • Average number of running shoes purchased in last 12 months: 3.2 pairs (6 – Im in that dang shoe store every other month it seems)
  • Last running shoes purchased: ASICS (25.1%), Brooks (15.8%), Nike (14.0%) (Asics Sky Speed)
  • 58.6% spent $90+ on their running shoes and 40.5% purchased their running shoes at a specialty running store – check
  • Favorite brands of running apparel: Nike (57.3%), Under Armour (40.4%), ASICS (32.2%), adidas (31.2%) (Asics, Adidas, Brooks)
  • 77% spent $100+ on running apparel in the last 12 months and 63% purchased running apparel at a specialty running store - I only spend money on shoes
  •  Average Weight: 172.9 – 162
  • Average Height: 5 feet 10 1/2 inches (um, not!)
  • Average Body Mass Index (BMI): 24.4 – not sure what mine is
  • 45.2% are content with their weight check
  • 44.3% are content with their fitness level – check, though I wish I was a sub 3:20-marathoner

Here’s a little chart from that survey as well. When I blogged last week that  blacks don’t run , I didn’t know somebody was actually counting. But take a look for yourself at the demographics:
