52yr old male with a very strong family history of heart disease and stroke. Every male in my family tree (except for me) has had either a heart attack or stroke by age 48. Tried eating "healthy" and exercising religiously for years, only to be saddled with a very low HDL cholesterol (<32). Started taking niacin six years ago to boost my HDL, and while still eating healthy, raised it all the way to 44. Finally took an NMR lipid profile test and I had a very high number (>1,600) of small, dense LDL particles. I then read "good calories, bad calories", got really angry, and developed a plan to transition to a very unhealthy eating plan. Over the course of a year, with the assistance of the USDA's Standard Reference Database for Food (e.g. SR21), I decreased my carb and polyunsaturated fat intake, increased my saturated fat intake and the results are astounding. My HDL is now 76, my triglycerides 45, LDL 70, and my blood sugar (fasting) 80 (non-fasting) 91.
