Having a drink is perfectly acceptable- whether it's wine, juice, coffee or water. Just holding a beverage or sitting in a cafe reading a newspaper while drinking something is cool in my book.
I'm not quite sure what you mean though- yes, eating is acceptable, but you don't HAVE to be eating in public all the time. Do you mean at parties/functions? I usually scope out healthy options in those situations, or use the time to focus on the conversation aspect rather than food.

Eating is absolutely socially acceptable. In public? You can eat without someone giving you a second thought absolutely everywhere. Don't feel like doing something? No one can argue with you eating, it's necessary! So, food becomes the perfect excuse. But, I don't want that anymore. What are some things to fill the void? Something to occupy yourself in as many situations as food can? I've head people say to journal or draw or things like that--but you can't do that in social situations. What is as universally ok as eating?
