Do you battle with constant or chronic sugar cravings? Maybe the cravings just hit you mid-afternoon or when you get stressed out? Maybe the cravings for sugar include that glass of wine when you get home at night? It’s hard to feel good about yourself, stay healthy and energized when you’re a slave to the sugar train.
I jumped on the train early in life. Growing up vegetarian we ate a heavy carb diet (carbs like pasta, pizza and bread that quickly convert to sugar). So from the age of fourteen when I started bingeing I was headed down a path of often uncontrollable sugar serenades that would take a week to stop. If I stayed away from sugar I was okay, but having that first Snickers Bar, whammo…I was on the train and flying high.
I always knew there was something chemical that contributed to my binges when I was bulimic, because there were days when nothing upset me and I couldn’t wait to get my carb, wine or sweet fix. I stumbled on to part of the answer in 1990 when I had my first full-blown yeast infection.
I went to the doctor got my diagnosis and a Diflucan prescription. The yeast infection went away. Cool. Then I got another ear infection, had to go on antibiotics again and the yeast infection returned with a vengeance. It wasn’t interested in leaving me alone this time. My vaginal skin itched, and I was uncomfortable. My energy was depleted and I had a hard time focusing and concentrating at work. After three years of doctors and prescriptions I began to research what was happening and first heard the words Candida overgrowth.
As a young girl I had numerous ear infections and was on penicillin so many times the docs were concerned I would build up an immunity. That one thing contributed to my issues with sugar sensitivity. (Stay tuned for my next blog on this topic.) My medical history, combined with being on birth control pills for twelve years all escorted me to this state.
Since 1990 I’ve tried numerous Candida overgrowth protocols, done cleanses, followed the yeast overgrowth eating plan and never got where I wanted to. The sugar train was still calling my name. But all of this time I continued to feed the yeast by consuming wine, less and less as time went on, but I still got the “jones” for wine once a week.
This past Monday, I took a blood test after being on an herbal protocol since last June and finally, my yeast overgrowth is gone from my bloodstream. Finally, the yeast is contained in my intestinal tract where it is supposed to be. And for the past several months I have enjoyed the best state of health I’ve ever had. No cravings, which for me is complete freedom. I set a goal seven years ago to kick this, to rid myself of this sugar sensitivity and it’s side effects. This is one of the biggest goals I’ve set and achieved, it took a huge dose of belief, a ridiculous amount of persistence and brought an incredible reward far beyond what I ever imagined.
I’ll be sharing more about Candida overgrowth and the effects of antibiotics (so over prescribed) in upcoming blogs, so be sure to follow this blog so you don’t miss them.
