Miss Lori is outraged by new dance class for children
Posted Sep 29 2010 9:05pm
I gotta tell you, usually the only way I see anything on FOX news is through snippets airing on The Daily Show . However, a fellow MomsLikeMe/Chicago Discussion
Leader brought this clip to my attention. A Fox News anchor interviewed a fitness center owner in Vancouver. Why? Because the owner is offering group pole dancing classes for children as young as 9, and private lessons for children as young as 5. No, pasties and clear-heeled platform shoes are not required, but can certainly be purchased additionally at your own expense.
Okay, I jest…sort of. Truthfully my sardonic humor is just a mask for my overwhelming outrage. Have we lost our gosh blessed minds?! To date our sexualization of children has been slightly undercover , but this… this… this is the full monty! Yes, (the pun was intended.) Oh, but wait, I am not even done yet. Wait till you hear the names of the classes.
No, I am not making this up. The owner defends that the names were constructed to attract an adult consumer. (Ok, fine.) And she only started offering the classes to kids after some of her existing customers brought their children in to observe the classes. (Alrighty.) “Any reason why you didn’t change them when you started offering these so called fitness classes to children, Hmmm?” (Duh!) The owner also points out that she isn’t forcing this on anyone; that a parent has to sign a child up. So obviously the parents doing so must not have any objections to the title or content. Which, by the way, doesn’t include any undulating, according to the owner. “Well, thank goodness there is a line being drawn, however vertically.” (A chill just went down my spine.)
Though it is true many a young woman has had to put themselves through college or night school by pole dancing, I am absolutely positive that there are no scholarships awarded for the activity. It is, and always has been an activity for eroticism, even the fitness classes. And there is nothing wrong with that…for consenting adults. But that’s it. Let’s not kid ourselves here. (Yes, another pun). This is not me seeing dirty things in so called innocent activities. No, when you say pole dancing, everyone cracks a devilish smile and an uncomfortable laugh because you are talking “naughty”.
Bottom line for me, until pole dancing becomes an Olympic sport it shouldn’t be categorized as an acceptable after school activity for children. My advice to parents: stick to the gymnastics classes. They have poles there too. They are parallel and uneven, and are a great source of physical exercise. No clear heels required.
