Ignorance and Denial of ED Behavior

Posted May 29 2011 11:54pm

I was reading an article in People magazine (1985 issue) about Karen Carpenter’s death from abusing Ipecac. In it, it talks about another woman who died of the same thing a month later. Her name was Deborah Mae Mellon.

Her brother-in-law laywer was quoted saying, “She was a happy, healthy woman who simply was desperate to lose weight.”

Read that quote again. Did your eyes roll like mine did?

How can you put the terms “healthy” and “happy” in the same sentence with “desperate to lose weight?”

Someone who is desperate to lose weight is not happy, nor are they healthy if they are using IPECAC, a product for those who have swallowed poison, to induce vomiting.

Please.
