Here's another addition to the blog, and I struggled to come up with a decent name (reaffirming that titles and names are clearly not a strength of mine). For now I've settled on Random Project. I toyed with Project of the Week or Month, but we already have a couple of things like that. And I tried out The Friday Project, but that didn't quite work out either. So...
The title's not totally random, speaking of random... there is a bit of symbolism in it. It's a tiny tribute to the Nickolodeon TV show, iCarly. Those of you who know the show will now realize that I'm actually a 12 year girl who writes this blog- or that I have friends that age (both are true actually!). But before you think I'm just going off on a tangent here, let me say that, in addition to being fun, and good, harmless entertainment for that age group, I have found that I like to watch the co-stars. You never know for sure, since they are acting, of course, but they appear to be comfortable in their bodies and with themselves.
They're willing to do very silly things, have humor about themselves, not look perfect or all put together all the time. In other words, the show portrays teenagers, particularly girls, in ways that are atypical of most tv and movies, ways that are much more realistic and healthy. OMG, the girls even love pie! How normal is that?!!! We want our young women to see images of girls having fun, not having to know everything, not having to act too grown up too soon, not being afraid of pie... right? And, it just happens that one of the silly things they do on iCarly is suddenly break into dancing, "Random Dancing" in fact... So, as a tip of the hat to iCarly, we'll try out Random Project as a title.
Ok, on to our first project, which is a Connection Bracelet. (you can make a necklace, hair tie, necktie, wall thing... whatever, because the name of the game on this blog is flexibility - so go ahead and modify any of these projects in any way you want to. Just don't hurt yourself doing it).
Here's the deal:
1. Gather something that represents/symbolizes each of the important connections you in your life- any assortment of friends, family, nature, God, pets, yourself, whatever is meaningful to you. Each should be small enough to easily be put onto a bracelet etc- think of the typical size of things on charm bracelets. You can use pictures, photos, drawings, rocks, shells, beads, bits of driftwood...
2. Once you have all your pieces you'll have a sense of how long a string/chain you'll need to fit them on. Find whatever material you want to string the charms onto and string away! I'll leave it up to you to decide how to attach the ends together if you are making a necklace or bracelet. I'm not very artsy, but I do know that art/craft stores have all kinds of cool things to help you out with this project.
3. Either wear or display your bracelet/etc. whenever you want to, to remind yourself of all your connections. You can either make additional ones whenever you add in new connections to your life, or you can make this first one able to be added onto in the future.
No perfectionism and/or harsh judgements allowed in our Random Projects!!! They're simply more of our experimenting with being in life :) and they are supposed to be not only helpful but FUN.
