Getting Your Share of Fruits & Vegetables

Posted Dec 16 2011 10:33am

We all know why it is important to get fruits and vegetables into our diets. We should be having them with each meal and the Canadian Food Guide recommends that teens should be eating 6-8 servings a day. That means that the majority of what we eat should be fruits and vegetables.

I know it can be difficult to incorporate fruits and vegetables into all of our meals and snacks, but I have come up with a list of ways that you can make sure that you get your share throughout the day.

1.For breakfast, along with your cereal or toast, why not have a piece of fruit. Add a banana or berries into your cereal…have an apple or other piece of fruit with peanut butter spread on toast.

2. Have a smoothie along with breakfast or have it as a snack during the day. Into a blender, mix some of your favourite fruits with some milk and a couple chunks of ice…simple as that. My favourite is a banana and strawberries. This also works well with frozen fruits.

3. Don’t forget some lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, some slices of red pepper, or other crunchy vegetables in your sandwich for lunch.

4. Loading up a salad with some chicken or other form protein, along with your favourite vegetables is a good way to make sure your get your vegetables at lunch.

5. Along with crackers or other forms of whole grains as a snack, don’t forget celery, carrots, or another kind of vegetable or fruit as a snack in between meals.

6. If you are having some yogurt as a snack, buy a plain flavour, cut up some fruit, and add it to the yogurt to flavour it naturally.

7. If you are baking, try a carrot cake instead, or zucchini muffins. Try adding fruits or vegetables into recipes that you wouldn’t think of.

8. Don’t forget side dishes. If you are having a piece of meat with a whole grain like rice for dinner, don’t forget to add vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, or whatever you might like. Remember most of your plate should be vegetables and fruits.

9. When having a meal or snack, have the fruits and vegetables before the other things. That way you are eating the most important thing first. You will also ensure that you are getting the nutrients and vitamins from fruits and vegetables, and then getting the protein, dairy, grains that you need too.

10. Remember not to eat fruits and vegetables or meals too close to going to bed. It makes it too hard for your body to digest the food when you eat late at night.
