Eating Disorders Awareness Week - Waging War Against Eating Disorders!
Posted Mar 05 2009 2:41pm
I am pleased to report that last week, some very valuable efforts around the Country really made an impact in the fight against eating disorders.
For example, in multiple States across the Country, legislation was introduced that raised awareness of the seriousness of these illnesses and paved the way for more specific steps to be taken - steps that will help improve care and impact recovery efforts.
In California, State Assembly Concurrent Resolution 28 (ACR28) was introduced to the Legislature. The resolution was co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma and Senator Patricia Wiggins. The resolution made the week of February 23, 2009 officially recognized as National Eating Disorder Awareness Week in the state of California. Both legislators were very supportive of the efforts of the National Eating Disorder Organization's STAR Program and we are looking forward to additional conversations and the possibility of discussing plans for future legislation to fight back against eating disorders.
Those of you who live in California may wish to contact either Assemblywoman Ma or Senator Wiggins at their Capitol office to thank them for their work on this exciting piece of legislation.
In addition, Assemblywoman Ma was so moved by the presentations that day that she blogged about the event. Click here to read her Blog piece.
Doris Smeltzer, author of Andrea's Voice: Silenced by Bulimia, gave a moving testimony about her daughter. Andrea was a vibrant young woman who, tragically, lost her life to bulimia. For more about Andrea and Doris' work with the Andrea's Voice Foundation, Click HERE.
In addition, Connie Sobczak, Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Body Positive shared about the importance of prevention efforts. Connie does some wonderful work encouraging women to love their bodies, and themselves, and fighting the body hatred we see in so many young people today.
As Lara Gregorio, national coordinator of the STAR Program said following the event, "Thank you all for your support, for the work that you do, and for the battles that you are fighting. We can accomplish change if we all pull together."
