If you want to get help for binge eating, one of the first things to reealize is that deprivation and restriction is one of the biggest triggers for binge eating. When you label particular food as bad, you trigger the binge eating response. Getting help requires eliminating the restrictive and dieting behavior which inevitably always leads to a binge.
Binge eating was the last frontier of my eating disorder and the hardest one to overcome. It is also the most frustrating because there is still a lot of shame and stigma attached to it. However it is the most common and prevalent of all eating disorders and you are not alone!
A lot of people live with this disease in secret because it is so misunderstood. However, it does not make it less valid or painful.
It is a real problem, a real disease and the suffering is incredible.
Getting binge eating help also means coming out of isolation, asking for help and shedding light on your behavior. Just rememebr that you are not alone and there is no shame in it!
Here are some things that worked for me to get binge eating help:
It was very important for me to use the visualizations exercises
I had to stay away from other disordered eaters.
I eliminated binge food from the house.
I stopped weighing myself
I stopped reading online diet and pro ana sites
I stopped talking about my eating disorder
I kept repeating to myself that i was recovered
I had to cut back on exercise for a while
I kept busy focused on other things like my work and writing
I spent a lot of time eating WITH people
I started to focus on the principles on Intuitive Eating and becoming a normal eater. You can find many good resources on intuitive eating here.
Dont expect perfection at intuitive eating immediately. It takes time, practice and being gentle with yourself.
Whenever you fall, pick something up.
Oswald Avery
Will I gain weight if I start intuitive eating?
I completely relate to those fearful feelings. That was what kept me stuck in the eating disorder for so many years. I thought that if I “let go” of the diets and restrictions that I would gain so much weight and be completely out of control. But the complete opposite was true.
In fact it was when I was constantly dieting and restricting that I gained all of the weight. As soon as I let go of the diet mentality and all the things associated with it, I actually lost over 30 pounds.
I started to eat things that I actually liked and as a result I didn’t feel like binge eating and I no longer felt deprived.
I started to eat out with people, especially normal eaters and I learned to be a normal eater myself.
Getting binge eating help starts with a strong desire to recover. Once you decide you want to get well, there are many things that you can do to recover. I have been recovered for several years and have not felt a compulsion to binge eat at all in that time.
