Brain ‘distorts own body image’

Posted Jul 14 2010 12:00am

Today I read a post about a new craze so disturbing I am not sure where to start!  It was written by one of my Facebook friends, titled Teen Toxing.

Teens seeking Botox to prevent wrinkles Proof of beauty obsessiveness gone stark raving mad is the up and up rise of teens turning to Botox – known as teen toxing. Yup…you heard right. According to stats from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 12,110 Botox shots were administered to girls under 18. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports 11,889 Botox procedures on patients 13-19. Yes you heard right – 13 to 19!!!! Girls that are barely pubescent getting shots to keep wrinkles at bay. Brave new world or a very wrong one?

Seems young girls are turning to Botox as a preventative – to stop them from getting wrinkles. Now, don’t know about you, but this is insane on so many levels.
1) Why on earth would you be thinking about, let along worrying about, ageing at 13, 15 or even 19?
2) What does this say about how girls value themselves?
3) What does this say about our society and its obsession with youth and preoccupation with avoiding perceived “imperfection”.
4) What hope have girls who start botox age 14 or 19 have of looking normal vs Bride of Wilderstein??

And what is worse?  The parents are eagerly encouraging this behavior!  We are designed perfectly imperfect, we will naturally age, when did this become such a bad thing?
