This morning, I talked about Creating Your Own World and living in it . We say we live in a fact paced stressful world… well that’s what you see. My world if filled with love, simple happiness, and memories of great times. When we look back on life of course we’ve had our down times but what we remember most are the good memories.
I invite you to sit back and let’s being back some great memories shall we? Think of something in life… a random something that you see every single day… I pick fruit. I have apples in the refrigerator, bananas on the counter. I go day to day just grabbing and going, looking to them for fuel for my morning run. Today, let’s stop and really think about fruit.
I remember growing up my dad had an old army jeep. It was rusted, dirty, metal seats, and only went 35 miles an hour. Once a year my brothers and I would load up and sit on those rusted seats with baskets and a big smile on our faces. My grandma would sit in the passenger seat and my dad would be the driver. We would take that rusted old jeep across the road to a field. Hanging on and being careful that we didn’t fly out on those steep hills and so excited to get to our destination.
Finally we would get to a big patch of blackberry bushes. Now, these were wild blackberry bushes. Thorns galore were on these babies but we didn’t care. We thought it was so wonderful that we could pick something so delicious off something growing in the ground and eat it. They were free, they were ours, and we loved every minute of piling them into our baskets.
At the end of our trip with would combine all of our berries and give them to my grandma who had the magical power of turning them into the best pie you’ve ever ate.
To this day blackberry pie is my favorite pie of all time. I honestly don’t think it’s because of the taste. Although the taste is wonderful, I don’t find it any better than an apple pie or peach. What makes the blackberry pie so special is the memories it brings back to me. When I see a black berry pie, my mind goes back to those days of riding in the rusty jeep and loving every minute of our special fruit filled trip.
Today, I’m a mom and I can’t make a pie like my grandma. But I am so excited to give my kids the type of memories I have. Last year was our first trip apple picking and the kids had a blast.
