America the Beautiful

Posted Sep 22 2008 5:37pm

I just wanted to pass along the announcement about a new documentary released on August 22, 2008 in Los Angeles. America the Beautiful is a hard-hitting look at the potential media influence on Western beauty ideals, eating disorders and body dissatisfaction.

You can check the link above for more information about the film.

While, America the Beautiful is   a captivating film that may be useful for treatment providers, patients and families, it should be said that this film is a popular, not a scholarly, look at some of the pertinent issues.I will also caution that it has received a "R" rating. I attended a screening on opening night in Los Angeles and was impressed by the commitment of the film maker, Darryl Roberts, to the issues regarding the media that affect women and teens.

I particularly took note of one comments made by a fashion insider who stated, "we're selling dreams, man. It's not real." He went on to admit, "we do have a responsibility to project a certain [healthy] message...but will that sell magazines?"

For those of you looking for DVD's for use in the classroom or in group therapy, I highly recommend
