My college son ran out of ultram after a week on it. How can he ease his withdrawal symptoms?

He was prescribed Ultram by the college health center for chronic back pain, and (surprise) ran out after using up the week's 'trial' prescription.  He is now in withdrawal, and does not want to go back on the drug.  The center is closed.  Is there anything he can do to accelerate the withdrawal or ease the symptoms?
