Friends

I'm a wife and mom. I'm a writer, copy editor and a music lover. I'm an athlete and a reader. I'm trying to balance it all. Why Sound Check Mama? I chose it for two reasons: My daughter was born deaf and now hears with cochlear implants, and we have to do a sound check with her processors to make sure they're working. It's also a nod to my love of music.

I went suddenly deaf in 1975 at age 4 of unexplained causes. I wore a hearing aid in my one "good" ear for just over 30 years, and then within the space of about a year year I lost all my remaining hearing. In November of 2007 I implanted my right ear and in August of 2008 I implanted my left ear. My speech comprehension scores have jumped from 8% before the implant to 98% after, so I consider...
