Health knowledge made personal
My research, clinical practice and books have tried to help people understand how their eating is influenced by their brain chemistry and mood. And on the other side, how they can activate their mental energy and decrease their stress by what they eat. My co-author, Dr Nina Marquis and I wrote a recently published book, The Serotonin Power Diet, Rodale 2007 which helps people control overeating caused by emotions and/or medications for emotional disturbances. The solution? Increase sertonin's anti -hunger and pro-good mood activities by eating carbohydrates .The brain makes new serotonin and the appetite and stress go away. This eating therapy also works, as we discovered for PMS, winter depression, and smoking cessation.
My current concerns are how to get children and adults to eat more healthily, exercise and sleep better. I also like to focus on how lifestyle sets up obstacles to prevent all of us from living healthier lives. Toxic work schedules, long commutes, school lunch served at 10:30 am, no time to eat before the school bus, shift work and the high cost of food and gas are problems which make us eat too much, or the wrong foods, r skip the right foods and forget about exercise.
I have been married forever to the same wonderful man whom I met when I was in college. I am a mother of two, a grandmother of three, and co-owner of a wonderful long-haired dachshund named Simon. ( My close friend and neighbor owns the other half of the dog).
