Sometimes we in the healthcare field need a little push ourselves.

For an example let us take a look at me. My career in healthcare spans nearly 30 years. Heart Health: Cath Lab, Angiography, Electro-Physiology, Polysomnography, and sleep education.

Over the past few years there has been a decline in my overall health. My PCP was puzzled. Well, of course being educated in Cardiology, Neurology, Sleep and holding several credentials I know it all…WRONG!  The reality check came into play August 2004. While attending a polysomnogram (Sleep Study) The worst possible thing happened. Sudden Cardiac Death Syndrome. If it were not for my patient performing CPR and calling the code my life would have slipped away forever.

After cardiac defibrillation and the implantation of an internal defibrillator we began the search for the cause of the event.

It didn’t take long to find the answer. Sleep deprivation! Simply burning the candle at both ends. At the time of the event I had been awake 30 hours.

Me, a veteran healthcare worker didn’t take my own advice.

So this is why I am here… learn from others what I should have already known, or to get an extra nudge in the right direction.
