Today was Preston's 18 month pedi appointment. I knew the doc would not be happy that Preston was still eating baby food. He actually sat there with his mouth hanging open in disbelief as I explained that he will only eat breads and crackers. (Which, by the way, we can't even get him to eat spaghetti anymore.) When he finally did get his jaw off his lap, he explained that if we don't get him eating regular food soon and off of baby food then Preston might be at risk of developing some textile problem that he had a fancy name for. I explained I try and try each and every day, and he just picks up the food and throws it on the floor without ever trying it. His conclusion in this is that Preston is having behavior problems, and we need to deal with them now or deal with them later. He suggested that when Preston throws food on the floor to take him down from the high chair and place him in the playpen without any toys. When he calms down, put him back in the highchair offering the food again. If he does it again, then we do it all over as many times as it takes.
Well, we tried that today, and guess what? It doesn't work. Preston never ate what we offered and he only threw one piece down. We put him in the playpen as instructed, but he never calmed down. He was down right hysterical, and I really don't think he understood why I put him in there in the first place. Ryan and I are convinced that our pedi's kids never had an issue about eating. Heck, I had no clue how bad it was until Preston. My other kids LOVE food!
As for the force feeding I spoke about in the title, I tried that, too. All he does is gag and spit out the food. I will say that I did get Preston to eat one new thing today. I made him a half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and he ate almost the whole thing.
After the whole feeding conversation with the doc, Ryan and I decided not to even tell him about the bottle or pacifier. As for the bottle, Preston hasn't had one in two days so I guess it's not really an issue. And we decided today to put the pacifier away where Preston can't see it or reach it. We are weaning to naps and bedtime again. After we do that, then we will work on losing it for those, too. Ryan is even wanting to start moving Preston over to a toddler bed soon. This is all just a little too much for me right now. I think the toddler bed is gonna have to take the back burner for now.
He got 2 immunizations today. :(
