The Ds community lost a great man....Dr. William Cohen

Posted Apr 01 2009 2:53pm
I just found out through a friend that lives in Pittsburgh that Dr. William Cohen passed away Friday night of a massive heart attack. For those that frequent the Ds conferences I know you have at least heard him share his wisdom about Down syndrome and the recent research being conducted, and probably, as we have, met him and shared a cocktail or two.

He was the Director of the Ds Center at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh for those that weren't fortunate to have met or heard his conferences.

What a wonderful advocate for our kids he was. He will be greatly missed.

Here is his bio. I will share more as I find out.

Peace Bill.

EDITED TO ADD:
This is the notice sent out to the DS community in Pittsburgh:

Dear Families and Friends of the Down Syndrome Center,

It is with great sadness that I write to you to tell you that Dr. William Cohen passed away on Friday, Feb 6th (in Florida from a massive heart-attack). For almost the past 20 years, Dr. Cohen has devoted his professional career to caring for children and adults with Down syndrome. and supporting their families. Dr. Cohen was known throughout the world as an expert on Down syndrome. Families in Western Pennsylvania truly had a gift in Dr. Cohen.

Arrangements to celebrate Dr. Cohen's life will be posted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. A memorial service will be held by Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh at a later date. I will send you an email once those arrangements are finalized.

If you are interested in sending a condolence, please use the address below and I will forward your thoughts onto Dr Cohen's family.

Sincerely,

Sheila
